Bodily Matters

Hilary Butler - Sunday, August 30, 2009
"Bodily Matters” by Nadja Burbach. First, a background to my review: 20 years ago, my then GP, whose thesis was on smallpox, expressed surprise that I could have accepted without investigation, the medical dogma which stated that the smallpox vaccine saved the world from much misery, and vanquished Smallpox. Like most people today, I’d absorbed the “stories” from school and thought no further...

The Murky side of Merck

Hilary Butler - Sunday, April 05, 2009
The writing of hitlists is something most people associate with gangs, criminals and the Mafia. So perhaps it will come as a surprise to read of a trial in Australia about a hit list  of the names of doctors who spoke out against a drug called Vioxx. This particular list was not made up by Gambino Mafia, but by white collar pushers and shovers at ... Merck. it's common knowledge that Merck is r...

What's in a word?

Hilary Butler - Saturday, February 28, 2009
The title of our first book came at 1.30 a.m in the morning. I’d been watching a recorded TV programme on the MenZB showing a nurse about to jab a child. She said, “little prick…” The child exploded vocally out of the blocks, and was inconsolable. I thought back to my last phlebotomist’s visit, when the ubiquitous “just a little prick” came out. And the day when she speared a twisted vein and t...

Influenza vaccine - a mother's gift?

Hilary Butler - Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Today, the New England Medical Journal published a study hailing the influenza vaccine given to mothers, as a valuable protection to stop babies getting the flu. The study project from Bangladesh was called “Mother’s Gift”. A bit like Gardasil’s inventor’s medical article, before Gardasil was licenced, called, “God’s gift to women: The Human Papilloma Virus vaccine.” [PMID:16920633] The unwritt...

The Gardasil 'miracle' coming undone?

Hilary Butler - Saturday, August 30, 2008
Dr Renate Klein, a biologist and social scientist, has written an opinion piece on Gardasil, which is spot on. So that's my blog for today. Go and read what she thinks. Oh.. and you should read the forum as well. Fascinating.  Sort of.

Gardasil - whiter than white

Hilary Butler - Friday, August 29, 2008
What happens when Merck is unhappy with Gardasil immunization rates in USA are sub-par? It would appear that strings are pulled so that the National Institute of Health hands over $2.08 million dollars to Florida based Moffit Research Institute,  to study the problem. Moffit appointed a team headed by Susan Vadaparampil to survey pediatricians, obstetricians, gynecologists, family doctors etc...

Gardasil - more thoughts

Hilary Butler - Thursday, August 28, 2008
After finding pancreatitis was a listed in VAERS, I then went to the VAERS data base to study the more "common" side effects from Gardasil, such as fainting, dizziness and nausea. Using key words in the symptoms column, such as "pancreas" and "diabetes", "fainting" "Dizziness" etc, it was disconcerting, just how many girls had what outwardly might be classified as a faint, but had symptoms cons...

Pancreatitis from Gardasil NOT coincidental

Hilary Butler - Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Recently a letter was printed in the Medical Journal of Australia reporting on three women vaccinated with Gardasil who got pancreatitis. Naturally, Merck came out with their usual "correlation does not causation make." I'd suggest that Merck pull back and do a bit more thinking before opening their mouth. Because if they've done there homework, they will see that Gardasil has been proven to c...

Medscape wave the magic wand

Hilary Butler - Saturday, July 26, 2008
A fascinating article was published on medscape on 26 July 2008, which vanished about as quickly as it was put on the web. Since it no longer exists, copyright no longer applies as far as I am concerned. I'd hate to deprive you of a long read, which obviously someone considers a very bad omelette. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578110 NO LONGER on medscape   HPV Vaccine Adverse Events W...

Trust me, I’m the expert

“Good Morning New Zealand, News stories of the day from the 1930’s” is a Horton and Wilson/Moa publication (ISBN 1-86947-66-4) which we were looking through last week. Page 15 in the 1931 section, has an advertisement for Craven “A” cigarettes:   Doctors these days, don’t talk about the fact that there was a time when they actually prescribed cigarettes as a cure to asthma, emphysema and oth...

It’s all coincidence, my dear

Hilary Butler - Saturday, July 19, 2008
It’s amazing what happens when a Hollywood star, who happens to be sister in law to a Philadelphia paediatrician gets upset and worried about vaccines.  A story in Cookie Magazine relates how 36 year old Amanda’s neuroticism was so rampant that her brother-in-law arranged a series of phone calls with his mentor, Dr Offit. Presumably this was done to counter what Offit told her was the burgeon...
